A Satsuma incense burner of round form on four small pod feet, its finial formed as three kiku on leafy branches. Along its curved body, gilt-lined cartouches are rendered with wild chrysanthemums and grasses in iron red, gosu blue and gilt enamels. Cartouches are linked by brilliantly-designed medallions with floral patterns. Gilt Hozan signature and seal can be found on base with gosu blue Shimazu mark. A distinctive lozenge-form, Satsuma koro, beautifully designed with groves of chrysanthemums on one side and peonies on the other, detailed in low relief gosu enamel, gilt and iron red. Delicate scrollwork decorates the shoulders, upon which rest a reticulated silver cover shaped as a chrysanthemum with moriage flowers along the border. A small, fan-shaped Satsuma kogo, its lid an arrangement of women and children engaged in various arts and crafts. Within, a lone sparrow rests upon a leafy maple branch. The luxuriant borders complement the simplicity of the renderings. Yabu Meizan’s gilt signature cartouche on base. (Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) is one the greatest Satsuma artist of the Meiji Period.
