A tripodic studio porcelain incense burner reminiscent of ancient Chinese bronze configurations. Its striking color palette defines the lower portion's three legs in a brilliant yellow enamel and the cartouches along the shoulders, deep cobalt blue on an iron red ground patterned with geometric shapes. A rare and important two-piece pottery censer in the form of a Buddhist lion standing on four robust legs. The lid (the creature's head) and the powerful body are naturalistically modeled with a flame-like mane and tail - the entirety, richly gilt. This censer is a signed work by Imperial Court Artist Ito Tozan, and includes tomobako with textile insert. It is in excellent condition with no chips, damage or restoration. A covered studio porcelain kogo of round form by Imperial Court Artist Makuzu Kozan. Its exterior is completely rendered within rondels of feathery phoenixes, their bodies detailed in mauve-colored glaze. The background is a profusion of cobalt karakusa and lappets. Interiors are restrained to an elegant white-gray glaze. Makuzu Kozan signature within a circle on the base. This one-of-kind ceramic kogo is in excellent condition.
