A trapezoidal iron tsuba, its imagery based upon the legend, “The Hare and the Moon”. (On the front plate, chiseled in low relief in gilt and copper, the hare greets the hungry old man, Sakyamuni, sack over his shoulder. When the hare prepares to jump into the fire to provide food for him, Sakyamuni prevents the action, instead sending him to the moon to be honored for eternity.) Signature with kao: Ikkeido Jyoi. A fine shibuichi and multi-metal tsuba of oval form with takazogan imagery in gold, shakudo and silver. Under a wisteria tree, the immortal Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzse, reads a scroll atop an ox, a sinuous river scrolling nearby. The image of the river, continuing on the reverse exhibits an asymmetrical view of a wisteria tree, its strongly chiseled boughs wrapped in mist. This elegant multi-metal tsuba is in excellent condition. Length: 2.75”, width: 2.5”. 19th Century, Japan.

An extremely fine kinko tsuba of oval form with cockerel family executed in gold on a shakudo nanako ground. The cockerel family is depicted in takazogan with generous use of gold detailed in high relief. The cockerel family rummages for food on one side and on the reverse, two chicks appear to wander off the tsuba's edge.
