A charming boxwood netsuke sculpted as Kadori Miojin with double gourd in hand astride the notorious namazu fish, jet inlaid eyes. Miojin kneels with one leg as he tries to pacify the tremors of the “earthquake fish” - to no avail. The gourd in his hand, is symbolic of a useless endeavor. An oval soft metal tsuba, its smooth surface with an asymmetrical image of a powerful tiger relaxing with his front paws upon the base of a tree. The stealthy feline’s body is inlaid with gilt eyes and shakudo stripes. On the reverse, the tiger’s muscular back is visible through the cut-out design. Unsigned. A fine silver tray of round form decorated both in moriage (high relief) and uchidachi (chasing) techniques. Beautifully-rendered cherry blossoms and foliage are spread upon its partly-hammered ground. Its unusual handle is carved out of a bamboo section with keyhole design and secured to the body with bold shrimp-like stitches, a v-knot at the apex.
