Japanese Antique Pottery Incense Burner
A rare and important two-piece pottery censer in the form of a Buddhist lion standing on four robust legs. The lid (the creature's head) and the powerful body are naturalistically modeled with a flame-like mane and tail - the entirety, richly gilt. This censer is a signed work by Imperial Court Artist Ito Tozan, and includes tomobako with textile insert. It is in excellent condition with no chips, damage or restoration.
