Japanese Antique Netsuke of Woman Stirring Mochi
A whimsical, stained boxwood netsuke sculpted as a seated peasant woman with humble demeanor stirring a large pot of mochi. The woman is finely modeled with pleasant facial features and fine, long hair, her sleeves rolled up to facilitate the arduous work of stirring the sticky mochi. (Such an everyday activity was a common subject among netsuke-shi, who saw fascination and dignity in the routine activities of the peasant folk.) This netsuke is in excellent condition. Height: 1.75” Late 19th Century, Japan
